Commercial and Industrial Construction

Thinking of tomorrow today: sustainable commercial, public and industrial buildings made of wood are both innovative and forward-looking, as modern timber construction is cost-effective, environmentally friendly and future-oriented.

Entrepreneurs naturally strive above all to work cost-effectively and efficiently. In commercial, public and industrial construction projects, however, environmental awareness and sustainability are also coming to play an increasingly important role. In all of these categories, there is a trend towards modern timber construction, which is just as flexible as the raw material itself.

Office and administrative buildings, factory halls, warehouses, workshops and also public buildings such as hospitals, schools and homes for the elderly … these are just a few examples of what modern timber construction is capable of. All while ushering in a more sustainable future.

The Natural High-Tech Building Material of the Future

Wood may be one of the world’s oldest building materials, but for SWISS KRONO it is also the construction material of the future.

Natural wood owes its structure to a combination of insulating cavities and moisture-regulating cell walls, making it ideal for virtually all uses. Despite being relatively lightweight, wood is extremely strong, even rivalling concrete in this respect. Wood is a high-tech building material that holds great promise for the future, as it naturally meets all of the prerequisites for modern, efficient and cost-effective construction, is durable and sustainable, and also allows buildings to be very flexibly and creatively designed.

Eco-Friendly and Energy-Efficient

With a view to the environment and the worsening scarcity of resources, the popularity of wood is steadily increasing – and for compelling reasons. Wood is the only building material that renews itself when sensibly managed, and it owes its exemplary environmental footprint to this fact. Particularly for commercial and industrial construction projects, wood – while also being carbon-neutral – can not only save energy but actually reduce long-term costs while improving the indoor climate and storing a huge amount of climatically harmful CO2 at the same time.

Considerably less energy is also required to produce wood-based materials than conventional building materials. And nothing is wasted, as even the tiniest left-over bits can be channelled back into the process and utilised.
Wood also scores points where energy efficiency is concerned. As it is a naturally poor conductor of heat, it is predestined for building energy-efficient houses. Together with the right insulation, it also provides protection against heat in the summer and cold in the winter.

Modern Timber Construction: Flexible Planning and Design

Modern timber construction meets all of the requirements for sustainable, cost-effective construction of commercial buildings. Extensive prefabrication of modules makes it possible to complete projects much faster so they can be occupied that much sooner. And there are practically no limits on the possibilities for subsequent enlargement or extension, for instance by adding a storey or constructing an annex.

Although wood is light, it is able to support enormous loads. In some respects, it is even superior to steel and concrete. Especially in industry, where large halls uninterrupted by supports or pillars in the middle are in great demand, timber constructions are ideal for a wide variety of uses. In earthquake-prone areas and where there is heavy snowfall in the winter, wood constructions are also the best choice due to their high strength.

Even in the event of a fire, wood happens to be an extremely safe material: unlike steel, when wood is exposed to flame it remains able to support loads for quite a while, even at high temperatures. Its slow burn rate even makes it possible to precisely calculate how its loadbearing ability changes in a fire.
There are really no limits to the imagination in modern timber construction, as wood can be freely and unproblematically combined with other materials. This makes wood a universal construction material that permits flexible planning and a huge range of possible combinations in both interiors and exteriors.

An Innovative System That Is Revolutionising Commercial and Industrial Construction

SWISS KRONO has developed an innovative construction system that revolutionises commercial construction for multiple reasons, starting with its format. It brings together all of the mentioned advantages and therefore ensures extremely fast construction, a long life and sustainability. We’re talking about the SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB system: a massive timber construction system involving prefabricated, extremely dimensionally stable, storey-high elements.

SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB is used to create wall, ceiling and roof panels measuring up to 18 by 2.8 metres. The raw board used for the SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB system is 25mm thick. Between three and ten stacked layers of it, depending on specifications, are glued together to yield a total thickness of at least 75mm and as much as 250mm. This gives rise to lastingly windtight building constructions with a minimum of joints.
It is an officially approved massive timber system for time-saving, eco-friendly construction. Unlike conventional massive construction systems, it sequesters carbon and thus actively helps to protect the climate.

This innovative modular approach makes it easy to quickly and flexibly implement special-purpose structures while keeping all costs transparent and predictable.

The benefits of building with wood, and especially of modern timber construction with prefabricated modules, are diverse, and the design possibilities are virtually endless. Wood, being a natural material, has a pleasantly calming effect and creates a healthy indoor climate. Wood and wood-based materials are a cost-effective, forward-looking, sustainable solution for everyone who wants to achieve great results while saving money.
