HolzbauPlus 2014: Enter Your Building!

  • Kategorie: General

21. July 2014 | Contest Devoted to Building with Renewable Raw Materials

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Health, in cooperation with the organisation Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe e.V. (“Specialist Agency for Renewable Raw Materials”), held the first “HolzbauPlus” competition two years ago. With more than 150 entries, the premiere was a resounding success. Now the second contest is about to begin – the deadline for entries is September 1, 2014.

The Germany-wide competition is designed to foster building and renovation with energy-efficient wood and strengthen projects’ ability to serve as models and influence the construction industry, decision-makers and builder-owners. Experience has shown that holistic approaches involving more than simply building with timber can lead to especially effective, sustainable solutions for building new houses and renovating existing ones. More and more builder-owners are consciously opting for timber construction and responsible use of resources. The HolzbauPlus competition is intended to call attention to the effectiveness of these building methods by issuing awards for exemplary solutions. The main criteria applied by the jury are:

  • Use of insulation made from renewable raw materials
  • Use of renewable raw materials for crucial components
  • Use of bio-based or natural materials for interior finishing

Awards go for excellent renovation and construction projects in these categories:

  • Residential buildings
  • Public buildings
  • Commercial buildings

In all, 45,000 euros of prize money go to the winners, which are picked by a jury of experts headed by Martin Wollensak, a professor of building material technology and construction at the Wismar University of Applied Sciences, Technology, Business and Design.

In 2012, a reference project submitted by KRONOPLY won first place in the “commercial buildings” category: the administrative building of the logistics centre of Scheiffele-Schmiederer KG in Philippsburg. The jury was impressed by its mixed structure, which successfully combined various timber construction elements. Since then, more buildings – many of them spectacular – have been erected using KRONOPLY engineered wood products. We can well imagine that the design-orientated Contzen-MAX house or the single-family detached home perched on a slope in Albstadt might have an excellent chance of a podium finish in the “new residential buildings” category. In the “commercial buildings” category, the orthodontic practice in Schildow may very well win over the jury with its eco-friendly timber-panel approach. Detailed information on these buildings and the use of KRONOPLY wood-based materials is available under Customers -> References.

The competition is open to those responsible for forward-looking private, commercial or public buildings completed or renovated between November 1, 2012 and August 31, 2014. Buildings must be located within Germany. Detailed information on the competition and required documents is available at (in German only).

The awards ceremony will be held in Berlin during the International Green Week lasting from January 17 to 26, 2015.

Detached single-family house in in Albstadt, Germany: modern architecture with resource-conserving timber construction. Orthodontic practice in Schildow, Germany: quickly assembled from modules. The administrative building of Scheiffele-Schmiederer KG in Philippsburg: varied use of wood and wood-based materials.
