New herringbone production facility launched

20. May 2020 | The new facility for production of laminate for laying in a herringbone pattern is in operation at the SWISS KRONO plant in Heiligengrabe. A success thanks to all involved, which cannot be praised highly enough in these times of the corona lockdown. Two years ago, when planning began for this specialised production by the HOMAG company for SWISS KRONO, it was clear that it would be an extremely demanding project involving several million euro. The circumstances under which finalising and commissioning of this flooring production took place, in March and April 2020 during the corona lockdown, would previously have been imaginable only in a feature film.
Construction work began in August 2019. The individual machine parts and the robots were delivered in the New Year. "We set up the new production line in our existing warehouse. Normally, new buildings would have to be constructed for a production facility of this size. So, in the planning phase, it literally came down to every last centimetre available to us," explains Conrad Huhn, head of flooring production.
Completion of the flooring production facility
The outstanding achievement of the machine builders and the SWISS KRONO team was demonstrated when the machine parts were delivered. These were manoeuvred with millimetre precision into the warehouse. This required not only a sensitive touch, but also patience. "Even though it didn't always look like it, in the end, everything fit into the warehouse exactly as we'd planned," explains Ronald Symossek, head of the SWISS KRONO project department.
By the beginning of April 2020, it was possible to start production of the new laminate for the herringbone laying technique at SWISS KRONO. "It took only a month longer than expected to finish the facility. Even under normal circumstances, that's a big success with a project of this size. And in these corona times it's almost a miracle," says Conrad Huhn.
New herringbone collection
The new product from SWISS KRONO is called 'herringbone' and is available in eight different décors. "Herringbone patterns for floors are very popular right now," says SWISS KRONO TEX managing director Hendrik Hecht.
"With this new collection, we're able to offer our customers an additional product that sells well. The team that completed the new facilities did a great job, and I'm hugely grateful to all of them. Especially right now, when the corona pandemic is weakening the global economy, it's more important than ever for us to be present in the market with a compelling range to secure our business."
