Climbing rents, the need to spend months to find a new home and crowds at open house viewings: these are some of the symptoms of the shortage of high-quality, affordable living space in cities. A study by the German Economic Institute in Cologne found that it will be necessary to build around 350,000 new flats a year until 2020 to meet demand. Modules measuring up to 18 x 2.4 metres with a thickness between 75 and 250 mm are then very quickly assembled into lastingly airtight buildings with a minimum of joints.

The system is highly versatile. SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB is suitable for both new buildings and the addition of storeys. The modules also enable constructions with large loadbearing surfaces, making them ideal for vertical and horizontal extensions and refurbishing projects. Existing structures aren’t damaged or compromised in any way, as it is a dry construction system (as opposed to masonry and concrete).
As SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB can be very flexibly prefabricated without the need to follow a prescribed grid or layout, it is straightforward to adapt new structures and annexes to pre-existing architectures, building exteriors and proportions. The system excels both as a complete construction solution in its own right and in combination with other building methods.
SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB modules can also be used without problem to erect taller and subterranean buildings with larger units (building classes 4 and 5 in Germany). And because they are so homogeneous, it is easy to calculate the burn rate according to DIN EN 1995-1-2. What’s more, there are tested constructions that resist exposure to fire for 30 and 90 minutes to serve as models.
Fast & Easy Assembly on Small Building Sites in City Centres
The extensive prefabrication and large-format modules greatly speed on-site assembly. A storey or even an entire house can be put together and sealed against the weather in just a few days. This delivers clear advantages for everyone who is directly or indirectly involved or affected. Time-consuming setup of large building sites with storage areas for materials such as bricks, concrete and small parts is largely eliminated, as the modules only need to be transported and immediately assembled.
This means no more weeklong blockages of roads and pavements, fewer traffic jams as a result of labyrinthine traffic diversions and less noise and contamination inflicted on neighbours. New dwellings can be occupied almost immediately to start generating rental income. And as the walls are thinner than with masonry and concrete construction, there is more indoor living space.
Housing construction is additionally speeded up by the fact that many kinds of plaster, tiles, wallpaper and paint can be directly applied to SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB interiors without the need to first attach plasterboard and then apply, trowel and sand filler. This not only saves time but also slashes costs for materials and labour.

KNAUF Rotkalk regulates humidity and absorbs odours, resulting in an optimal indoor climate when used in combination with SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB.
