Successful Architectural Event in Hamburg: FUTURE IN TIMBER

  • Kategorie:

28. September 2020 | After our highly successful kick-off event in Stuttgart in March, unfortunately the coronavirus pandemic obliged us to press the pause button on our activities during the summer. We are therefore very happy to resume our activities now. The first event for architects took place in the former central customs office in Hamburg.

Our invitations triggered a huge response and the FUTURE IN TIMBER event was very well attended, which greatly pleased us. SWISS KRONO has a lot to offer where timber construction is concerned, and we’re working with external specialists to make our knowledge available to architects and planners – who are eagerly snapping it up.

The event was opened by Hannes Bäuerle, the founder and CEO of raumprobe, with a talk on the subject of “materials with new possibilities”. He presented wood as an innovative material whose enormous potential is still far from being completely tapped. When combined with innovative technologies, this natural substance encounters gives rise to state-of-the-art, high-tech materials. And when additionally backed by digital planning and production methods, it quickly becomes an attractive alternative to concrete.

Carolin Steigemann, an application technician at SWISS KRONO, then showed how SWISS KRONO OSB boards are produced and presented the latest new developments: the almost odourless SWISS KRONO OSB/3 sensitiv EN300 and flame-retardant SWISS KRONO OSB/3 SF-B EN300 (B-s1, d0). She also pointed out that SWISS KRONO only uses completely formaldehyde-free binders to makes its engineered wood products, as a result of which these OSB boards contain only the formaldehyde that naturally occurs in wood.

She was followed by Karl-Heinz Weinisch, the founder and CEO of IQUH GmbH, who spoke about indoor air quality and the challenges and potential pitfalls of measuring it. Weinisch provided an impressive glimpse of the complexities involved in performing these measurements, including quite a few illustrative examples from his everyday work, and raised the audience’s awareness of the many external factors that must be taken into account. For those interested in learning more, he recommended the website of Informationsdienst Holz at www.holz-und-raumluft.de (unfortunately only available in German).

The next item on the agenda was a presentation of the solid timber construction system based on SWISS KRONO MAGNUMBOARD® OSB. While referring to a full-size module which had been placed in front of the former central customs office, Harald Sauter, an application technician at SWISS KRONO, explained its properties and advantages. This system boasts a variety of certificates on aspects including soundproofing and food safety, as well as an expertise by DIBt (the German Institute for Civil Engineering). Thanks to extensive prefabrication and rapid assembly, it is ideal for both panelised and modular construction. The attendees were invited to personally inspect the exhibit to learn more about its details.

A presentation of the SWISS KRONO TIMBER PLANNER by application technician Stefan Gottfried was also a huge success. This digital planning tool for timber construction makes it easy for planners, engineers and architects to quickly identify appropriate modules for their projects.

Reinhard Eberl-Pacan, a licensed fire protection expert, put the finishing touches on the event with a passionate plea for everyone to take advantage of the many strengths of timber construction. He sees no reason for it to be treated as inferior to other building materials, as it is in fact a forward-looking alternative offering diverse benefits. He vividly explained why timber products are not incompatible with the aim of preventing fires, stressing that it is high time to get rid of this unfounded prejudice.

The feedback received from the event’s attendees was thoroughly positive. Everyone left with new ideas, prospects and inspiration. We would like to thank everyone involved for the agreeable atmosphere and are glad that the event was such a resounding success. A follow-up for Hamburg is already being planned. The next event for architects will be held in Berlin on 27 October 2020. Click here to register (in German only)!
